What is Metal Casting?

Understanding of Metal Casting

Metal casting is a process of melting metal into a liquid that meets certain requirements and pouring it into a mold. After cooling, solidifying, and cleaning, a desired shape, size, and performance cast are obtained. Because the cast blank is almost formed, the cost is reduced by avoiding mechanical processing or reducing it, and to a certain extent, time is reduced. Casting is one of the basic processes of the modern machinery manufacturing industry. The cooling speed of metal mold is fast, the organization of castings is dense, and it can be strengthened by heat treatment. The mechanical properties are about 15% higher than that of sand casting. Metal mold casting has stable casting quality, better surface roughness than sand casting like sodium silicate sand casting, and a low waste rate.

Metal casting is the process of manufacturing items by solidifying molten metal into a mold. This is one of the oldest methods of metal forming, dating back several thousand years. Metal casting is typically used to construct parts with complex shapes that are difficult to manufacture using other methods. It is the most commonly used method of producing durable metal parts such as train wheels, gears, and other components. Metal casting is mainly used in heavy equipment, transportation, and machinery.

What can be used for Metal Casting?

The materials commonly used for metal casting include iron, aluminum, tin, zinc, magnesium, copper, and lead alloys. Gray iron (an iron alloy with a graphite microstructure) is widely used in industrial manufacturing. Ductile iron, as its name suggests, is used when greater stiffness is needed than gray iron. Gold, silver, and other precious metals are used in jewelry making.

Consumable and non-consumable mold casting, simply put, the mold is simply a hollow container that holds the liquid material (such as wax or metal) and shapes it. Casting molds are mainly divided into two categories: consumable and non-consumable. Consumable mold casting is classified by composition, including sand, plastic, shell and plastic, and investment casting such as vacuum investment casting process. This casting method uses temporary, non-reusable molds.

Outstanding Metal Casting techniques

As a China stainless steel investment casting company, our investment casting (also known as lost-wax casting) is a casting process that uses refractory materials to make the shell and is used to manufacture stainless steel, brass, and aluminum alloys. The liquid metal is poured into the hole of the refractory material. The product of investment casting has an exceptionally high-quality surface. Main features: high precision; suitable for parts with complex structures; high-quality finished surfaces; suitable for iron-based and non-iron-based metals.
