Characteristics and Application Scope of Investment Casting

Introduction to investment casting

Investment casting, also known as precision casting or lost wax casting, is a casting process where a precisely shaped object is produced using a mold made of fusible material, such as wax or plastic. The mold is then coated with several layers of refractory coating, such as gypsum or silica sol casting, which is dried and cured to form a solid shell. The shell is then heated to melt the mold and create a refractory shell. The liquid metal is then poured into the shell and allowed to cool, forming the final product. Investment casting is an excellent casting process in the casting industry due to its low or no cutting requirements and is widely used.

Squeeze die casting, on the other hand, is a method that can produce high-strength castings with complex shapes and thin walls. Let us introduce you advantages of squeeze casting. It involves injecting molten metal into a die at high pressure to achieve a high level of detail and accuracy. This method is commonly used to produce parts for the automotive and aerospace industries. However, the process often requires more machining and finishing compared to investment casting and can be less cost-effective for smaller production runs.

Characteristics of Investment casting

Investment castings have high dimensional accuracy and surface finish, and can cast complex shapes of castings. Generally, the accuracy can reach 5 to 7 levels. Investment casting can produce small castings, and the minimum wall thickness of the investment castings can reach 0.5mm, with a weight of only a few grams. It can cast patterns, texts, castings with fine grooves, and curved fine holes. The outer shape and inner cavity shape of the investment castings are almost unrestricted, and it can produce complex shaped parts that are difficult to manufacture by sand casting, forging, and cutting methods. The type of casting material is almost unlimited, and it is commonly used to cast copper, alloy steel, carbon steel, and heat-resistant alloy castings. The production batch has no limit and can produce from a single piece to a large batch. The disadvantage of investment casting is its complex process and long production cycle, and it is not suitable for producing castings with large profile sizes.

Application of investment casting

Investment casting is mainly used for casting complex-shaped precision small parts, such as blades, impellers, guide wheels, guide wheels of steam and gas turbines, small parts on automobiles, tractors, and wind-driven machine tools that are difficult to process, as well as crafts and jewelry. The process is also commonly used to manufacture components for the aerospace and medical industries due to its high precision and excellent surface finish. With the use of advanced technology such as vacuum investment casting processes, investment casting can achieve even higher levels of accuracy and surface quality, making it a preferred method for producing critical parts in demanding applications..
