The Application and Advantages of Sand Mold Casting

Casting is a metal thermal processing technology that human beings mastered relatively early, with a history of about 6,000 years. China has entered the heyday of bronze castings between about 1700 BC and 1000 BC, and craftsmanship has reached a very high level. The material of the casting mold can be sand, metal, or even ceramic. According to different requirements, the method used will be different. Each casting technology has its characteristics. So what are the characteristics of sand mold casting and where is it applicable?

Ⅰ. About the sand mold casting

Foundry enterprises have very strict requirements on casting technology, which is mainly reflected in the preparation of molding materials, molding, core making, metal smelting, pouring, and solidification control. Sand mold casting is one of the casting technologies. Sand is mainly used as the molding material. It is characterized by good adaptation. It can be used in small parts, large parts, simple parts, complex parts, single parts, and large batches. Sand molds generally use gravity casting, and low-pressure casting, centrifugal casting, etc. can also be used when there are special requirements.

Sand mold casting is the most common casting technology used in the foundry industry today. It is suitable for various materials, ferroalloys, and non-ferrous alloys. It can produce castings from tens of grams to tens of tons, and even larger. The disadvantage of sand mold casting is that it can only produce castings with relatively simple structures. The biggest advantage of sand mold casting is low production costs. However, in terms of surface finish and metallographic phase of castings, the internal density is relatively low. In terms of molding, it can be hand-shaped or machine-shaped. Hand molding is suitable for single parts, small batches, and large castings with complex shapes that are difficult to use in a molding machine. Machine molding can greatly improve surface accuracy and dimensional accuracy, but the investment is large.

Ⅱ. The scope of application and technological characteristics of sand mold casting

Application: Manual molding is suitable for single parts, small batches, and large castings with complex shapes that are difficult to use in a molding machine. Machine molding is suitable for mass production of medium and small castings.

The technological characteristics of mold sand casting: Manual molding: flexible and easy, but low production efficiency, high labor intensity, low dimensional accuracy, and surface quality. Machine molding: high dimensional accuracy and surface quality, but a large investment.

Ⅲ. Advantages of the sand mold casting

(1) Sand mold casting can ensure the quality level of castings.

(2) The production cost of the sand mold casting technology is low.

(3) The sand mold casting technology can reduce the labor intensity of workers and improve labor productivity.

(4) Use standard or general tooling to ensure quality and labor productivity.

(5) Sand casting can improve the utilization rate of the workshop area.

(6) Sand casting conforms to the regulations of technology and environmental hygiene so that workers can work in a better working environment.
